The Timberlea Athletic Park in Fort McMurray includes upgraded ball diamonds and associated site works, as well as four new soccer fields, a championship baseball diamond, cricket pitch and a box lacrosse/hockey rink.
Built to the highest standards, all fields include special soil and turf mixes, irrigation systems, lighting and amenities. Servicing, stormwater management and entry feature signage were also provided.
Other new park amenities include trails, site furnishings, a major playground, over 500 new parking stalls, an 8500 square foot clubhouse and two smaller park buildings (concession/washroom and maintenance office/garage).
Poor local soils meant they needed to be overexcavated and replaced. A custom soil mix was developed using a range of local materials for a free-draining sports field that will meet long-term playability and operational objectives.
Due to its location near a 500 hectare marshland upstream, the site design needed to account for stormwater drainage. An existing wetland and stormwater channels were integrated into the design to ensure that the sports field would not be inundated during storm events.
