Blue Grass Sod Farms Central Spray and Play

Red Deer, AB

As Red Deer’s first public spray park and incorporating themes relating to Red Deer’s centennial celebrations, the Blue Grass Sod Farms Central Spray and Play started construction in March 2013 and was ready for its grand opening in less than six months.

Sustainable Amenities

Some notable features of this spray park are its 7500 sq. ft. spray pad with 35 spray toys and two dump buckets as well as a chlorinated water reuse/filtration system that saves upwards of 30,000 gallons of water per day, fulfilling the park’s design as a low impact, sustainable amenity. A utility building houses a washroom/change room, as well as the water treatment and recirculation system that is integral to the park’s sustainability.

Centennial Themes

The spray park was designed using thematic elements such as a railway trestle spray feature, a train crossing signal and meandering blue river basin to reflect Red Deer’s rich history and environment.

Rotary Recreation Park

The new spray park was built in the northwest corner of the Rotary Recreation Park, which is also home to the Red Deer Recreation Centre, museum, art gallery and the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre, as well as having indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a speed skating oval, playgrounds and picnic facilities.

Grand Opening

Initial construction began in the late fall of 2012 and the park opened on August 13, 2013.
